The King Billy Northampton – The Kindest Bikers

Introduction

The King Billy, a staple in Northampton for around 40 years, is an old-school music pub known for its strong biker and rock music fan clientele. In a bid to ensure the pub's future, the landlady Rachel is expanding the range of music to attract a younger crowd of 30+ customers, alongside their existing 50+ patrons. Attracting the 20+ demographic is not feasible, as they tend not to drink much and often cannot handle their drinks when they do.

What they did

Under Rachel’s leadership, The King Billy has engaged in significant community service activities. They have conducted two Christmas Present Runs and two Easter Egg Runs, partnering with Support 81 Northants and Instigators Northants, and independently as well. These events benefit Welford House, a local foster home for teenagers, and involve collaboration with Jeanette Walsh, affectionately known as Mother Christmas. Jeanette, who dedicates her time to voluntary work with disadvantaged families and young people leaving care, uses the donations and support from The King Billy to aid the five homes under Welford House and to distribute items to social workers, families, and young individuals.

The community reaction

The community’s reaction to these initiatives has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite common stereotypes about bikers, the residents of Northampton have come to see them as compassionate and generous individuals. The bikers have demonstrated their kindness through various activities, such as providing funeral escorts, raising funds for The Air Ambulance, and giving terminally ill children thrilling bike rides or visits. Their contributions, although often understated, have significantly impacted the local perception of the biker community.

Impact

The King Billy’s community efforts have had a profound impact. Not only have they supported local foster homes and disadvantaged families, but they have also improved the public image of bikers in Northampton. Rachel’s dedication to changing perceptions has been aided by the local press, particularly the Northampton Chronicle & Echo, which regularly highlights their good deeds. This positive coverage has reinforced the pub’s reputation as a cornerstone of community support and goodwill.

Summary

In summary, The King Billy, under Rachel’s stewardship, has successfully fostered a sense of community and generosity, proving that bikers can be some of the most kind-hearted and genuine people around. Their efforts have not only benefited those in need but have also helped secure the pub’s future by attracting a supportive and diverse clientele
