The Marine Tavern supports the Royal British Legion

Marine Tavern: Brighton’s Smallest Gay Pub Making a Big Impact with the Poppy Appeal

Introduction

This is one of Brighton's smallest gay pubs. The wood-paneled walls provide a genuine 'traditional pub feel' in the heart of Kemptown. The Marine Tavern is a fantastic venue for locals and visitors alike, offering a friendly and energetic atmosphere with plenty of entertainment every week.

What they did

In 2023, the Marine Tavern volunteered to support the Royal British Legion with the Poppy Appeal after discovering that no one was available to organize the annual poppy deliveries and collections. Within just a few days, they were appointed as the Poppy Appeal Organizers for the area. They managed to gather a team and launch the Poppy Appeal in Central Brighton, raising an impressive £12,284.98 for the Royal British Legion. Their efforts were appreciated, and they were invited to the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday by the Mayor, where they received phenomenal gratitude and participated in photos.

Since Craig and Paul took ownership of the Marine Tavern in September 2023, the cosy venue has also raised funds for Brighton Food Bank, the Terrence Higgins Trust, and is actively raising funds for the RNLI throughout 2024.

The community reaction

The local community has shown immense appreciation for the Marine Tavern’s efforts. Their involvement in the Poppy Appeal and other fundraising activities has strengthened their relationship with the community. Being invited to the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday highlights the recognition and gratitude from both the community and local officials.

Impact

The Marine Tavern’s initiatives have had a significant positive impact. Raising over £12,000 for the Royal British Legion, supporting Brighton Food Bank, the Terrence Higgins Trust, and the RNLI, showcases their commitment to giving back to the community. Their continuous support for various causes not only benefits those in need but also enhances the pub’s reputation as a community hub.

Summary

The Marine Tavern stands as a testament to the positive role small local pubs can play in their communities. By organizing and supporting various charitable activities, they have made a considerable impact on both the LGBTQ+ and broader Brighton community. Their efforts in 2023 alone demonstrate their dedication to supporting veterans and other local causes.
