Greenhills faced competition from over 1,000 entries nationwide in the fifth year of the PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards. The pub was recognised for its exceptional community support, particularly following the diagnosis of Aiden Fitzpatrick, a member of the bar staff, with Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia (APL), a rare cancer affecting around 160 people annually in the UK.
In April 2023, the pub raised over £4,000 by hosting a charity football match to support Aiden. The funds were directed towards Blood Cancer UK, a cause close to the hearts of the pub’s staff and patrons. Aiden has since established the “Mental Health to Mental Wealth” group, which is held at the pub and offers free support to others in the community.
Shannon Wardrope expressed her delight, saying, “I’m absolutely ecstatic. Being such a small community pub we didn’t think we could achieve something like this. A big reason is raising money for charities. The main charity we raised money for was Blood Cancer UK for an ex-colleague who was diagnosed with Leukaemia. We all got together – past staff, present staff, and customers and did what we could. And coming to the Houses of Parliament is a great experience I never thought I would see.”
The local community has shown immense support and appreciation for Greenhills’ efforts. The charity football match and the establishment of the “Mental Health to Mental Wealth” group have strengthened community bonds and provided essential support for those in need. The award has further solidified the pub’s reputation as a pillar of the community.
Greenhills’ initiatives have had a significant impact on the East Kilbride community. The funds raised for Blood Cancer UK have supported vital research and assistance for those affected by leukaemia. The “Mental Health to Mental Wealth” group provides a safe space for community members to seek mental health support, fostering a sense of solidarity and well-being.
Greenhills in East Kilbride exemplifies the powerful role a community-focused pub can play.
