Charlie’s Bar faced competition from over 1,000 entries nationwide in the fifth year of the PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards. The pub was recognised for its outstanding community support, particularly following the viral success of their Christmas advert. The advert, aimed at promoting the bar and creating a buzz around Christmas, unexpectedly garnered a massive response, allowing the pub to raise £23,000 for local Northern Irish charities.
Una Burns expressed her joy, saying, “To be at the Houses of Parliament, and be invited in itself is such an honour, but to win the award is testament to the community spirit that the pub shows. When our advert went viral we never in our wildest dreams expected the response that it got. What was more important was to turn a video into actions and we were able to raise £23,000 for local Northern Irish charities. I’m so proud. Proud of what we have done as a community and proud of our bar. I’m overjoyed to bring the news home.”
The funds raised through the viral advert and a subsequent merchandise collection using a local, family-run supplier were directed towards charities supporting the elderly. In December 2023 alone, the pub raised £22,000 for two local charities. Additionally, Charlie’s Bar holds year-round events for various charities and sponsors a local football team and musical theatre group.
The local community has shown immense support and appreciation for Charlie’s Bar’s efforts. The pub’s initiatives to support local charities and create a sense of community have strengthened bonds and provided essential support for those in need. The award has further solidified the pub’s reputation as a vital community hub.
