The George in Castleton has been crowned best in England for the second year running for its sustainability efforts and protecting the local environment through green initiatives at the PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards.

The George entered its work into the UK Community Sustainability Hero category at the prestigious House of Commons awards, which recognises pubs which go above and beyond to protect the environment locally.

This includes pubs that work hard to offer sustainable solutions for its community and use innovative ways to support the environment.

The pub which is part of Wells & Co. won for its wide ranging and innovative initiatives and sustainable practices. It uses eco-friendly solutions at every possible opportunity, encourages local involvement in its sustainability work and promotes a circular economy. It focuses its operations on being green as well as fostering a collective sense of responsibility in the local community.

John Judson at The George said: “It’s a humbling moment to go up against such strong competition. We do a lot to be sustainable but it also saves us money as a business so everyone should think about what they can do to be sustainable as it also brings other benefits. Timer and smart plugs, turning barrel coolers off at points and growing herbs are just some of many things we do.“

The George was crowned at a prestigious award ceremony, sponsored by Matthew Clark, at the Houses of Parliament on 4 March. John and Vicky Judson from The George attended, along with industry leaders and MPs.

Des O’Flanagan, co-founder of PubAid, added: “The Community Pub Hero Awards highlight all the wonderful and invaluable work publicans do for their local communities and it’s heart-warming that pubs raise so much money for local and national charities. The standard or entry this year has been extremely high as many pubs continue to raise the bar when it comes to supporting their community so The George should be extremely proud of what they have achieved to be crowned the winner.”

PubAid, which organises the awards in association with Matthew Clark and the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group, is the positive voice for UK pubs.
